The faculty and staff members here at MCPS believe that fostering a welcoming and positive learning environment is key in producing happy and productive learners. To assist us in this goal, we have a school-wide Positive Behavior Intervention and Support system, or PBIS. Through PBIS, we will be teaching character education and rewarding students regularly for their efforts to meet the following goals, which we call “STARS”:
S Show Respect.
T Think Safety.
A Act Responsibly.
R Resolve Problems.
S Stay Cooperative.
Positive behavior is celebrated in a variety of ways.
1. Classes have the opportunity to earn tickets for exhibiting positive behavior choices. The tickets are accumulated in the classroom and students celebrate when the following amounts are collected:
100: "Our Class Rocks, so We Get to Wear Socks"
200: Thirty minutes extra recess
300: Dinner & a Movie
400: PJ Day
500: Board Game Day
600: Tasty Treat Day
700: "Get Moving" Day
800: Picnic in the Park Day
900: Craft Day
1,000: Class Choice!
2. Students may earn "STARS" tickets on an individual basis for exhibiting STARS behavior that is "above and beyond" the expected behavior. These tickets are sorted and collected by grade level in the office and one ticket is drawn from each bucket on Fridays.
3. At the end of each quarter, teachers choose up to three students from their classrooms who have done outstanding jobs of exhibiting our five school rules. These students will be recognized in each classroom by the principal/assistant principal and given a special certificate as well.
